 Water-borne Illnesses & Deaths in Haiti

Before the earthquake, the Pan American Health Organization reported that the number-one health problem in children under the age of 4 is acute diarrheal diseases, and the leading cause of death is intestinal infectious diseases.¹ 

The second leading cause of death among adults ages 20-59 is intestinal infections.¹ While it is difficult in these types of conditions to isolate the cause of death, they are acquired through food and water-borne consumption.

Since the earthquake, experts estimate that about 2 million Haitians are displaced from the earthquake.  Living conditions have further declined.  An estimated 600,000 Haitians are living in camps or tent cities.  The availability of clean, safe water for most is limited or nonexistent.

Wrapping up another great year

Dear Ministry Partners,
Looking back over 2010, we see that this has been an incredible year for Global Effect as we have seen God open many doors for us to be the Hands and Feet of Jesus and to serve so many people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic! It is so amazing to see how God moves and works! Less that one year ago we had no plans to work in Haiti and now that is such a big part of our ministry. I know we are in the D.R. and Haiti to meet their physical needs and to share the love of Jesus with them, but many of them have taught us so much about what it means for Jesus to be our greatest treasure. Many times we find ourselves asking how they can live in such horrible conditions or how they can keep going and we are reminded again and again, with smiles on their faces, that "Jesus is our Hope"! It reminds me of what Paul says in Philippians 4: 10-14:

I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
 

The needs in Haiti and the Dominican Republic are great. There are areas that have an infant mortality rate as high as 48% due to lack of clean water. There is a lack of male leadership, high rate of unemployment and moral decline among young people as well. Global Effect's mission is to serve these impoverished communities by equipping them to transform their social-economic, physical, and spiritual well-being.

 

What God has done through your prayers
and financial support of Global Effect in 2010


In Haiti:
• Help build a water filter factory in Jacmel,
Haiti

• Raise funds for over 4,000 filters - That is
   more than 32,000 people with clean drinking
   water.

• Evangelize and minister to thousands in tent
   cities and refugee camps throughout Port
   au Prince and Jacmel, Haiti.

• Care for and support orphanages in Port au
   Prince and Jacmel.

• Secure land for the Village of Jacmel Project.

Here is a quote from Pastor Wilbert Placid, the lead Pastor for more than 42
churches throughout Haiti:

"Your coming to Haiti and meeting me in Jacmel was no accident and truly a divine appointment. Words cannot describe our appreciation for all that you have done. Most importantly - providing water filters for the orphanage and for the people of our community. Now we have safe, clean water in our orphanage. The children are healthier since we started using the filters. Before they were constantly sick with stomach problems due to the water. They are healthier and happy now because of the filters. Praise God"
 


Kenbe Fem Children's Home
We our also very excited about our new partnership with Kenbe Fem Children's Home.
Kenbe Fem means Hold Strong in Haitian. Danny and Leann Pye are the Founders and Directors of the home located in Jacmel, Haiti. The orphanage was first started in 2000. They have 22 Haitian children, 1 biological daughter, and another child on the way. They live in one house and run the orphanage like a home. The children, who are mostly teenagers now, stay busy going to school, attending church, and serving their community in several ways throughout the year.


In the Dominican Republic

110 men from 3 communities attended the Spring Men's Conference.
400 Water Filters have been donated so that every home in Los Rieles,
  Dominican Republic will have safe clean drinking water. Praise God!
  (Distribution will be completed mid January)
50 Water Filters distributed to the Los Sores Community.
50 Water Filters donated to Prison Guards of the La Vega City Prison
Women's sewing ministry started in Los Sores
The Bread of Life Bakery project started in Los Sores
Over 1,000 students participated in the Character Counts Program in 3 different community schools.
Land for the Ranchito Community Center - School - Church was purchased
Thousands of people in 4 communities, has been encouraged and challenged as well as equipped to live Christ-centered lives through the different community outreach events.

Again, we thank each of you who have prayed for us and given financially so that we could be on the ground in these countries meeting the needs of so many and communicating the Love of Christ. Know that it is through your efforts that thousands have heard and seen the love of God first hand and many have responded to his call on their lives. We would like to give a special thanks to the Chapel at the Beach, Church of Tuscaloosa and Church of the Highlands for their help in facilitating ministry events with teams they sent this past year.


As we come to the close of 2010, it is our prayer that you would continue to pray for us in 2011 and that we can continue to help equip the communities of Haiti and The Dominican Republic that we are serving. All of our year-end gifts will be going to our Water Filter Project in Haiti to help thousands of families that are dealing with the Cholera outbreak and still do not have clean drinking water. We Thank you in advance for your consideration.
